Sewing Machine Parts, Repair and Maintenance

The cloth is the basic need of human being. Can you imagine that a man can not live without wearing a dress or cloth, a sewing machine is used to stitch two or more ply of fabrics in order to make a cloth. A sewing machine uses to make cloth by sewing fabrics part together. Modern sewing machines are computerized control panel system. This article is about Industrial sewing machine, Sewing Machine Parts Repair, Maintenance, Servicing, Troubleshooting; Problems and solutions/ remedies, Sewing machine Brands; Singer, Juki, Brother, Janome, Bernina; Use of Sewing Machine and history of a sewing machine.
A sewing machine has many parts because of having a multi-function of its working principle. Here we are publishing an article about the Sewing machine parts list with pictures and functions.

Industrial Sewing machine
A modern sewing industrial sewing machine is auto/ automatic with many advanced features. Industrial sewing machine used in clothing factories to sew clothes, modern auto Sewing machine used in the Garments industry. A sewing machine is used to see fabrics to make clothes. From many references, I got to know the Sewing machine invented during the 1st industrial revolution, though that was the manual sewing machine. Modern Industrial sewing machines are designed in such a way that the fabrics guide easily to sew and make it out without hassle. Modern sewing machines are flexible to use with many automated processes of stitching what saves time, increases productivity and efficiency. Operating a Modern sewing machine is very easy because of its technical up-gradation over the years. Different types of sewing machines produce different types of stitch like lock stitch, overlock, zig-zag, blind stitch and so on.
History of sewing machine
Sewing machines have a long history from the invention to the development stage, it’s modification to the computer-controlled modern electrical sewing machine and sewing machines have reached to automation. Sewing companies are still giving their best effort to add automation by reducing human help. British Inventor Thomas Saint first designed a sewing machine in 1791 to be used on leather and canvas. Sewing machine development started in 1807, the first sewing machine presented by an Austrian tailor, Josef Madersperger in 1817. Lock stitch the sewing machine was invented by Walter Hunt in 1833, used an eye pointed needle carrying the upper thread and shuttle carrying the lower thread. In 1945, Elias Howe patented his sewing machine, using a similar method to Hunt’s, expect fabrics were held vertically. There are many developments that include invention to this era. I am not going to write complete sewing machine history; this article is not about sewing machine history too.
Types of sewing machines
1. Electrical operated sewing machine (industrial)
2. Manual operating Sewing machine

Electrical operated sewing machine:
All Sewing machines which is operated by electrical power, used in clothing factories as industrial sewing machine with many automatic functions.
Manual operating Sewing machine:
The sewing machine which is run by physical power, no electricity supplies needed is called manually operated sewing machine. These types of sewing machines used in tailoring dressmaking and homemade clothing. These sewing machines are not used in any industrial garment manufacturing.

Industrial Sewing machine Parts Name, List

Here we are giving sewing machine parts list and sewing machine parts picture for your easy understanding. This content is mainly all about sewing machine parts and its function.

Handwheel
Handwheel: Sewing machine operator use handwheel to adjust needle height by turning it.
Spool pin: Spool pin hold thread vertically. The spool pin keeps the spool in place while the thread feeds through the machine. Some machines also have both horizontal spool pins.

Spool cap: The spool cap slips onto the end of the spool pin and holds the spool in place. Spool CAP used to keep the spool in place when sewing machine running

Bobbin pin/winder: Bobbin winder is where bobbin keeps, set-top of a sewing machine. Built-in bobbin winders can be found on the top, front, or even inside of a sewing machine, most of the machines have at the top. We found most bobbin winders consist of a bobbin pin/winder to hold the bobbin while the thread is being wound, thread guides for maintaining tension, and a start/stop lever. Some bobbin winders have built-in thread cutters. A bobbin is placed here during winding as it called bobbin winder.

Thread guide: Thread guides may be hoops, discs, or flat metal shapes that pinch or direct the thread to feed it through the machine without tangling and at the correct tension.

Take-up lever: To pull the thread on up and down to feed thread when the sewing machine is running.

Stitch selector: By this option, we can select type what we want to use.

Presser foot: Pressure foot is an important part of the sewing machine. The Pressure foot moves with the feed dog to move fabric evenly through the machine.

Stitch length regulator: Adjust the speed with sewing motion, balance speed. Stitch length regulator is a computerized command to secure stitching.

Presser foot pressure control: Presser foot pressure control adjusts is the amount of pressure the presser foot applies to the fabric as it feeds beneath the needle. It increases pressure when sewing heavy fabric and decreases pressure when sewing lightweight or thin fabric.

Presser foot lifter: This lever, located above the presser foot at the back or side of the machine, raises and lowers the presser foot. When the presser foot is lifted, the tension discs are disengaged, and the fabric will not feed through the machine.

Needle: The needle carries the upper thread through the fabric to create a stitch. Specialty needles are available for specific stitching needs.

Needle threader: Needle threader is the part; you can insert thread to needle by its guidance.

Thread cutter: Thread cutter is used to remove the stitched piece from the machine, and to use the cutter, raise the presser foot. Most of the sewing machine has thread cutter as it’s a cutter blade in needle area.

Needle clamp screw: Needle clamp screw used to tighten and loosen this screw by a screwdriver to release or secure the needle in place.

Throat plate: The stitch plate, also called a needle, stitching plate or throat plate, is a flat metal piece below the presser foot. Slots in the plate allow the feed dog to push the fabric along.

Feed dog: The feed dog is a toothed metal piece below the stitch plate that moves up and down to push the fabric along, beneath the needle. Stitch length is controlled by how much fabric the feed dog moves.

Throat: The throat of a machine refers to the open space between the needle and the machine housing. A large throat is helpful when sewing bulky fabrics and large projects like quilts.

Bobbin cover: The bobbin cover is a plate or hinged door that protects the bobbin mechanism. The bobbin cover is used to keep bobbin on it, when need bobbin replacement the bobbin is open, and we can clean the case or bobbin area at that time.

Foot Pedal: Foot is known also as foot control; use to control machine speed regulator and stitching control. After switching on the machine, foot pedal controls control stitching and finish.

Sewing machine Repair, troubleshooting- Problems and solutions/ remedies

There are many repairing tasks of the sewing machine when its service is out of order. Works among repairing are Clean, Grease and Lubricating machine parts; ensure proper electric safety and supply in sewing, adjustment of all mechanism (gear, motor, Sensors) functioning well. Basics of Sewing machine Repair are clean it out, parts replacement from old to new, rethread the machine, Check your needle and thread.

Sewing Machine Maintenance and Servicing

Sewing machine performance, fitness, and good product quality depend on sewing maintenance of the sewing machine. Maintenance actions are tasks for retaining, fixing or restoring an item in a state in which it can perform its required function by the combination of all technical administration, managerial and supervising actions. Regular maintenance of sewing machine is Tension spring check; Take up spring check, Bobbin case spring checking, Thread wiper check, Oil level/ oil leak check and Needle plate/ fee dog check. Sewing machine basic Maintenance is cleaning, oiling, correct threading, needle adjustment, proper thread tension adjustment, stitch length adjustment, placement of fabric under pressure foot, folder adjustment. Proper Timing and tension is the key to sewing machine fitness. Maintenance equipment is a small and large screwdriver, adjustable wrench, hammer, cleaning brush, etc.
